Both consistency and coherence are needed of course but consistency should never be followed if it's at the detriment of the user experience. If being consistent doesn't make sense from a UX standpoint, you might have bigger problems than you thought. In this case, look back at the business goals and UX design strategy and make sure the decision is valid before moving forward.
